Cr (Chromium): The key element, responsible for passivating the steel. Ni (Nickel): Enhances stability and formability of the passive film. Mo (Molybdenum): Improves resistance to pitting corrosion, particularly from chlorides. H₂O (Water): The source of hydroxyl (OH⁻) ions, crucial for film formation and stability. Cl⁻ (Chloride ions): The villain in this story, is capable of disrupting the protective film. Passivation Process: Building the Oxide Film Stainless steel undergoes a pre-treatment process called passivation before facing acidic environments.
